What Happened to Sora? OpenAI Shut It Down

The shutdown timeline

Sora 2 launched on 30 September 2025; OpenAI announced the shutdown less than six months later, on 24 March 2026, and the app was gone by 26 April 2026 — under seven months from launch to shutdown. For a product that dominated tech headlines and had people trading invite codes like concert tickets, that is a remarkably short life — and a useful reminder about building a workflow on top of a single vendor's hype cycle.

Why OpenAI killed it

The honest summary is that Sora cost far more to run than it ever earned, and the audience did not stay. The Wall Street Journal reported Sora was losing roughly $1 million per day, while Appfigures data reported by TechCrunch on 24 March 2026 put its lifetime in-app purchases at about $2.1 million. The same Appfigures data showed downloads peaking at about 3.33 million in November 2025 and falling to about 1.13 million by February 2026. Video generation is brutally expensive compute, and a free-to-browse social feed of AI clips was never going to cover that. The official Sora account's farewell on X simply read: "We're saying goodbye to the Sora app. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you."

• Usage fell off a cliff after the novelty wore off — the feed filled with low-effort clips and people stopped coming back.
• Copyright and deepfake problems kept generating headlines OpenAI did not want, particularly around recognisable characters and real people.
• The Disney partnership collapsed, removing the licensed-content path that might have made the feed worth visiting. On 11 December 2025 Disney and OpenAI had announced a three-year licence letting Sora generate short videos with more than 200 Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars characters, plus a planned $1 billion Disney equity investment in OpenAI; the deal went with Sora, and TechCrunch reported that no money appears to have changed hands.
• Profitability pressure ahead of an IPO made an expensive, unprofitable side product an obvious thing to cut.

None of that means the underlying video technology was bad. It means a standalone consumer video app was the wrong shape for it, and OpenAI decided to stop paying for that lesson.

If you had videos in Sora

OpenAI told users to export their content before the shutdown dates and confirmed that data associated with Sora accounts would be permanently deleted afterwards. If you exported in time, you are fine. If you did not, check the export route below before giving up — but once any final export window has passed, the data is deleted and no support ticket brings it back. It is worth taking that as a general lesson: anything you generate in a hosted AI tool and actually care about should be downloaded the day you make it.

OpenAI's help article points to sora.chatgpt.com/sunset and its Export button, says it will email users before any final export window begins if one is offered, and says all data associated with your use of Sora is permanently deleted after any such window. For developers, the Videos API and the sora-2, sora-2-pro, sora-2-2025-10-06, sora-2-2025-12-08 and sora-2-pro-2025-10-06 models are removed on 24 September 2026 with no recommended replacement — download any stored video assets before then.

The scams did not stop — they got worse

• "Enter your login to verify" — phishing, full stop. Nothing legitimate ever asks for your OpenAI password on a third-party page.
• Pay-for-a-code resellers — invite codes were never officially sold, and now there is nothing to unlock. You will get nothing, or a stolen account.
• Code generators and "checkers" — these produce gibberish or quietly install malware. They never worked, and cannot work now.
• Fake apps in the stores — apps posing as Sora that demand permissions or a subscription up front. Report them.
• Urgency and countdown timers — "only 3 codes left in the next 5 minutes" is a pressure tactic, never a real offer.

The golden rule has not changed: never pay for a code, never share your password. That same scepticism is worth carrying into every shiny AI launch — a theme that runs through my list of the top 25 free AI tools of 2026.

What to use instead

Here is the genuinely good news: the gap between Sora and its rivals was always smaller than the hype suggested, and the best alternatives are available to everyone right now — no invite, no waitlist.

Where Sora actually ranks now

On the Artificial Analysis text-to-video leaderboard (blind user votes, with audio; snapshot from mid-September 2026), Wan 3.0 ranks first (Elo 1242), Gemini Omni Flash second (1237), MiniMax H3 Max third (1231), MiniMax H3 fourth (1225), Seedance 2.0 fifth (1220) and Kling 3.0 Pro tenth (1108). Sora 2 sits 14th (1098) and Sora 2 Pro 21st (1079). The model you can no longer use is also no longer near the top.

Gemini Omni: Google's newest video model. Google announced Gemini Omni at I/O on 19 May 2026 as a model that can create from any input, starting with video, with conversational editing. Omni Flash rolled out globally to Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers in the Gemini app and Google Flow, and at no cost to users 18+ in YouTube Shorts Remix and the YouTube Create app. Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash reached developers on 27 August 2026 (gemini-omni-1.1-flash) with scene extension in 10-second steps up to 40 seconds, first-and-last-frame control, 4K upscaling and a cheaper 360p preview mode. Google's API docs now recommend Omni Flash as the default video model and keep Veo 3.1 for scene extension, last-frame control and legacy pipelines; in Flow, Veo 3.1 Lite, Fast and Quality (4, 6 or 8 seconds) sit alongside Omni Flash 1.1 (up to 10 seconds). In India, Google AI Plus is ₹399/month (200 Flow credits), Pro ₹1,950/month (1,000 Flow credits) and Ultra from ₹6,500/month. There is no free video generation in the Gemini app or the Gemini API — YouTube is the free door.
