Build a Customer Support Agent
We will use Botpress for this build because its free tier and knowledge-base feature make it ideal for support. The Free plan (25 conversations, 3 AI agents, 100 MB of vector storage for the knowledge base, hard-capped with no add-ons) is enough to build and test; running it for real traffic means upgrading to Plus, which includes 250 conversations a month for $150/month billed annually. The goal: an agent that answers common questions on your website and escalates anything tricky to a human. Follow these steps.
- Create a new bot. After signing in, click New Bot and choose the support assistant template. This gives you a working flow to edit instead of a blank page.
- Add your knowledge. Open the Knowledge Base panel and upload your FAQ document or paste your website URL. The agent reads it and uses it to answer.
- Write the system instruction. In plain language, tell it who it is: "You are the support assistant for Acme Shoes. Be friendly, answer only from the knowledge base, and never invent prices."
- Add a human handoff. Botpress's official Human-in-the-Loop handoff requires the Plus plan or higher. On the Free plan, have the flow collect the visitor's email and end the chat as the fallback.

On 3 June 2026 Meta expanded Meta Business Agent to businesses of all sizes globally across WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, saying getting started is free and paid subscriptions will follow. Its developer docs list business information, FAQs, websites and files as knowledge sources, allow handoff to your app, and exclude finance, government, health, alcohol, gambling, over-the-counter drug and matrimony businesses. The Botpress route
Botpress can publish your agent to a WhatsApp Business number. Your bot cannot send messages to WhatsApp users until Meta has verified your business, and replies can also fail if your WhatsApp Business account has a payment-method problem. Here is the flow.
- Set up WhatsApp Business. You need a WhatsApp Business account connected through Meta. In Botpress Studio open Explore Hub, install the WhatsApp integration and select Authorize WhatsApp; Meta then has to verify your business before the bot can send messages.
- Reuse your support agent. The same bot you built above can serve WhatsApp; you simply enable the WhatsApp channel rather than rebuilding logic.
- Add quick-reply buttons. WhatsApp supports buttons. Offer choices like Track Order, Talk to Human, or See Catalog to keep chats fast.
- Respect templates. WhatsApp requires approved templates for proactive messages, which Meta has billed per delivered message since 1 July 2025. Free-form replies and utility templates inside the 24-hour customer service window are free only until 30 September 2026; from 1 October 2026 Meta charges for them per message. Messages sent in the 72-hour free entry point window opened by a Click-to-WhatsApp ad or Facebook call-to-action button remain free.
- Test on your own phone. Message the number, walk through every path, and confirm the handoff actually reaches you.
